The Manufacturing Institute is hosting its Framework For Excellence Conference in March 2019, celebrating both our 25th anniversary and 10 years of being a Shingo Affiliate.

The three-day event will also be the European Shingo Conference for 2019. It will serve as a meeting and debate space for the most experienced and insightful minds in the sector, and will draw on the lessons we have learnt from working with thousands of organisations since our inception.

Over the years, we have met many companies who have already ‘gone lean’ thanks to strong tools and systems. Whilst this is good progress, in reality many of these are a significant distance away from excellence.

Speakers at March’s conference will explore the implementation of operational excellence as well as manufacturing overall. They will focus on three core themes:

  1. Create the cause
  2. Mobilise the movement
  3. Build the community

Here are some of the reasons why you should join us.

You’ll meet the biggest names in manufacturing

A variety of major manufacturing personnel are set to star at the Framework For Excellence Conference.

Alongside our keynote speakers Terry Scuoler CBE (The Institute of Export & International Trade), Tony Cooke (Adidas), Peter Domeney (Jaguar Land Rover), John Steele (formerly UK Sport) and Martin McCourt (formerly Dyson), we will also have a series of manufacturing experts conducting breakout sessions across the second day of the event.

These include:

  • Jan Berg, Volvo
  • Aidan Murphy, Ipsen
  • George Donaldson, Devro
  • Sarah Jardine, Optos
  • Denis Paris, GSK
  • Brian Holliday, Siemens
  • Charlotte Dickerson and Rob Bland, Ricoh
  • Mark Davies, Nufarm

Some of the topics the speakers will be covering include the role of leadership, defining purpose, creating a sense of community, and growth through people.

You can learn more about each of our speakers and what they’ll be discussing by visiting the official Framework For Excellence Conference page.

You’ll have the opportunity to see operational excellence in action

Following two days of intellectual debate and insight into the world of manufacturing, there will also be the opportunity to take part in a series of site visits.

These facilities are demonstrating operational excellence on a consistent basis, and remain home to some of the most innovative, ambitious and successful systems in domestic manufacturing.

Research conducted by Populus polled a representative sample of 1,000 workers, where 42% said their company does not act in line with its purpose and values. Every member of an organisation must be working towards the same goal in order to achieve operational excellence.

A workplace should be a community where they feel appreciated. Staff must be connected and unified, firmly believing that their employer is dedicated to supporting them in their development and growth.

Surveys have shown that 34% of employees cited career development opportunities as a key factor to increasing workplace loyalty and engagement, while 31% listed training opportunities. There is no more precious commodity than talented people, and failure to invest in them puts the future of your business at risk.

In organisations that achieve operational excellence, employees actively take responsibility for the company’s goals as well as their individual contributions. On these site visits, you will see what this sort of workplace actually looks like.

Conference attendees are free to choose the site they wish to visit from a wide range of options. You can learn more about our site hosts by visiting the Framework For Excellence Conference page.

You’ll acquire essential knowledge you’d never ordinarily have access to

Aside from raising awareness of the high standards in the sector, both the speeches and site visits at the conference are designed to impart registrants with the kind of knowledge and skills that they can use to further advance their own manufacturing operations.

Through attending the Framework For Excellence Conference, you will return to your organisation equipped with an invaluable range of applicable, practical and progressive ideas, methods and solutions for continuous improvement.

We are committed to enhancing the sector in every possible way here at The Manufacturing Institute. This event will bring together industry enthusiasts and experts to contemplate the most important contemporary talking points.

The pursuit of excellence requires a mindset shift and embarking on a challenging journey in order to promote sustainable change. Senior leaders will hear how this can be achieved, recognising that employees are integral as both co-creators and leaders.

In many instances, the difficulty of establishing operational excellence lies not in developing new ideas but escaping from old ones. Our conference will function as a prime exhibition of a framework that enables this alternative approach – helping you learn how to mobilise the movement and create a community.
