Northern Powerhouse? The State Of Manufacturing In The North West

5th July 2018

Is the Northern Powerhouse as influential as some have suggested? Or is all the real manufacturing money located in the UK’s capital?

A recent report from Experian has unearthed some particularly interesting results with regards to the current state of manufacturing in the North West.

According to the consumer credit reporting agency’s findings, the volume of manufacturing deals completed across the North West during the first quarter of 2018 has dropped rather dramatically… but the value of contracts has risen.

Here, we take a closer look at what these results mean for the condition of the Northern Powerhouse and the manufacturing sector.

How has North West manufacturing fared so far in 2018?

In the first quarter of 2018, as many as 37 manufacturing agreements were completed, worth £932m.

Interestingly, the statistics also revealed a striking difference between Q1 2018 and the same period from the year before.

Small and medium-sized deals were down by 22% and 29% respectively, and they also suffered a decrease in value. Yet the large deal category showed considerable improvement.

Not only did the number of big-scale agreements double, but the value of these deals was an astonishing 255% higher than this time last year – a huge £1.3bn.

There was also a standalone contract agreed in the first quarter of 2018 worth £1.5bn.

What does this mean for manufacturing in the North West?

The current industry trade statistics are reflective of the fact that quality is better than quantity in manufacturing.

Whilst there are less deals being completed in the region, this may be because companies are reserving their handshakes for agreements involving much bigger numbers.

Instead of completing a series of smaller-scale contracts, North West manufacturing businesses appear to be aiming higher – sharpening their focus to concentrate on a lower number of bigger deals with greater financial prospects.
