HOW FAB LAB CREATED ITS FIRST MILLIONAIRE
Trainee lawyer Piers Ridyard was frustrated by the lack of storage on his Apple MacBook Air. The only options were to pay for an upgrade or carry around a heavy hard drive. He knew he could use an SD card to increase storage, but they stick out and are susceptible to damage.
Therefore, he decided to set out to design a device that would allow users to use an SD card without the risk of damaging it or the computer, consequently developing a custom sized SD card adaptor that would sit completely flush in the computer.
He developed the idea at home before teaming up with the product development experts at Fab Lab to produce a prototype. He then put his product on Kickstarter to raise the £6,800 needed to start production. He’s recently made his first million and has been hailed as the first Fab Lab millionaire!
