JulieMDr Julie Madigan BSc (Hons), PhD, MBA, FRSA
Chief Executive

Julie Madigan joined The Manufacturing Institute in June 1995 and was appointed Chief Executive in March 1996.

Julie oversaw the development of the Manufacturing Institute from this time, building the customer base, developing all of the product and service offerings, building a strong brand and reputation and establishing the Institute as the first of the Regional Centres for Manufacturing Excellence in the UK. In 2001 the Institute began to deliver the Manufacturing Advisory Service for the North West region. In 2003 the Agenda for Change in North West Manufacturing was launched, targeted to drive over £400 million of quality, cost and delivery improvements in the manufacturing base.  Since 1995 the Institute has worked in over 4,000 manufacturing companies and over 30,000 manufacturers have attended educational programmes focused on driving productivity.

She was previously MRPII Project Leader for Ciba Pharmaceuticals in Europe, based in Switzerland, with responsibility for supply chain integration covering three new focused factories and ten European demand streams. Prior to this, Julie was Project Manager for the UK Pharmaceutical Division’s Class A MRPII implementation. She began her career at Ciba in sales, after which she moved into marketing on an accelerated development programme. Julie has a BSc and PhD in Biochemistry and a Master’s degree in Business Administration.

Dominic Payne BA, FCA

Dominic Payne joined The Manufacturing Institute as Finance Director in December 2006. He was previously Head of Finance and Adminstration and Deputy to the Chief Executive of the Arthritis Research Campaign that raises funds to promote medical research into the cause, treatment and cure of arthritic conditions as well as providing education service for the healthcare professions and information for people affected by arthritis and to the general public.

He joined the Arthritis Research Campaign in 2001 from the MHA Care Group – a charity and housing association providing care and residential services for elderly people nationwide – where he was Financial Controller.

Prior to joining the charitable sector, Dominic spent more than 10 years with the Aerospace Group of Rolls-Royce plc holding various positions across teams focusing on supply chain business process improvement, procurement, IT and financial planning.

He also worked in industry as a senior internal auditor and financial controller/company secretary of the UK operation of the Krypton Computer Group.

Dominic is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. 

Adam Buckley
Head of Programmes

Adam Buckley is Head of Programmes for The Manufacturing Institute (TMI), responsible for managing delivery of the Adam BuckleyManufacturing Advisory Service contract in North West England, which since 2002 has helped regional manufacturers generate financial savings of £670 million. He directs TMI’s portfolio of education and training services, and is leading the launch of the internationally renowned Shingo Prize, which he was instrumental in bringing to the UK and Northern Ireland. Adam is also responsible for TMI’s Make It in Manufacturing campaign, a charitable programme aimed at attracting tomorrow’s talent into the sector.

Adam has broad business experience in both the private and public sectors and joined TMI in 2004 having spent the previous 15 years managing change programmes within manufacturing and distribution businesses across the UK and Northern Europe. He has a masters degree in management studies and is an accredited practitioner of PRINCE2.

Since 2007 Adam has held Programme Management responsibility for the £18m Agenda for Change programme, funded by the NWDA. Of the 43 individual measures on this 4 year programme, Adams's project management has achieved over delivery on 38, by factors ranging up to 700%.

John Woodruffe
Head of Business Development

John Woodruffe, Head of Business Development for The Manufacturing Institute has been at the helm of many John Woodruffetransformation programmes that have delivered dramatic cultural change and huge performance improvements. He has immense experience of every aspect of lean implementation from strategic planning and analysis through step-by-step improvement to engaging the wholesale commitment of the workforce to make sure that the momentum is sustained.

As Managing Director of furniture manufacturer HJ Berry, he led a total business transformation and lean culture change programme that resulted in increased turnover of 25% and significant cost savings through improved space utilisation and lower inventory and energy costs. He developed the company’s outstanding environmental policies and practices – leading the business towards recognition as one of the greenest manufacturers in the UK and the achievement of five national awards.

His record of achievement as a Manufacturing Institute Practitioner is exemplary, including guiding a change management company at Flowcrete - leading to a 32% increase in sales and dramatically improved profitability. He has also helped companies such as Jiffy Packaging, Warburtons and Coca-Cola in implementing lean improvements.

Eilish Henry OBE, BSc (Hons)
Head of Practitioner Services

Eilish was a pioneer of change management in government more than 20 years ago – leading efficiency and cultural Eilish Henrychange programmes to achieve significant and enduring performance improvements. Her trail blazing experience of introducing new working practices and methodologies is now being applied to the public sector’s current Operational Efficiency Programme – helping managers stretch limited resources for better service and improved performance. She brings strategic vision and rich experience to The Manufacturing Institute, where she is spearheading Lean transformation across the public and healthcare sector and among blue chip manufacturing businesses.

Eilish’s track record as a highly effective change leader speaks for itself as she has been at the helm of many transformation programmes that have delivered dramatic cultural change and huge performance improvements. She regularly shares her experiences as an international speaker on public sector reform.

She joined The Manufacturing Institute from PricewaterhouseCoopers where, as an associate, her team developed an approach to macro-level process mapping relevant to central government departments like HMRC and DWP.
